Because I made a few posts about how I don't like the name "Derpy."
Apparently Hasbro was pressuring WeLoveFine to remove or rename all merchandise with that character, and iTunes pulled the episode where she had a speaking role from their online store.
I've been accused of starting a petition that I've never even heard of in order to make this happen.
I'm very flattered, but bronies are giving me WAY too much credit for all this. (If only I had that sort of power to manipulate a giant corporation like Hasbro.) I'm not the only, or even the most active person speaking up about the problematic elements with the character. I just happen to be a very high-profile fan who has mentioned it a few times.
Here are some posts by other folks explaining why it's an issue:

The name recall is more likely more related to copyright issues than anything. Hasbro wants to own all their characters, but I bet they will have difficulty copywriting a slur like "derpy."
I find it a bit ironic that early on when I posted my opinion, I was accused of doing it for attention. But now, 4chan is promoting the hell out of my deviantart page in an effort to direct flames at me:

This was unexpected, but I couldn't have asked for a better promotion. So, thank you.
And thank you to those speaking up for me and setting the record straight in the comments, I appreciate it.
Yeah it's a little late, but better late then never.
Encouraging that it is okay to be different. My friend, who suffers from a 'mental' disability LOVES her. He thinks it's great that young children's shows are tackling that issue.
I also read the brony article you wrote on your tumblr, while I agree on some, I believe some phrases were exaggerated.
I've read that others find this offensive, and so I should respect their opinion... but that's not my way. I respect that you HAVE and ARE ENTITLED TO an opinion, but if you can't provide a substantive line of reasoning supporting it, then I'm certainly not going to respect it.
That a pony is portrayed as mentally/physically handicapped pony is not offensive. To BE offended by such is, ironically enough, offensive... at least, to me. Handicapped people are among us, living and interacting socially with everyone else, just like everyone else. Rainbow Dash treated her as incapable? Is this not the perfect opportunity to include a scenario just like this, that any kid watching the show might find themselves involved with in the real world, and then demonstrate how such people might overcome their initial reactions and treat others with the same respect they expect? Or should we just sweep them under the rug, and not acknowledge their existence at all?
That the pony is named Derpy is also not offensive, or at the very least it is no more offensive than, say, Ditzy. Of course, some people could find it offensive... but then, some people could find Pinkie Pie offensive. Why? Because the same deviant social group that uses derp as an insulting term also interpret Pinkie Pie's name as 'vagina'. So yeah, let's get rid of her too, because you know that reprobates are out there doing this, and removing her from the show is the surest way to prevent this from happening... oh, wait.
So yeah... if this is the best that you can manage, then I would say that the anger is justified, even if some of the responses are not. Why don't you spend some time being offended by some of the truly offensive stereotypical depictions of the main ponies in the series?
Not to mention, they had a psychiatric case with a screw as cutie mark, too, implying the pony was "screwy" or had a "screw loose". The community immediately picked up on that and gave it the strongly implied name. Was that offensive towards real life psychiatric cases? I think not. It's a cartoon, and people laugh at such things. Because they're funny.
I feel sorry for people who can't laugh at such things. In the end, ALL humour makes fun of something.
"A simple, undefined reply when an ignorant comment or action is made. Brought to life in the South Park series, when Mr. Derp made a guest apperance at South Park Elementary as the chef for a day, followed by hitting himself in the head with a hammer and exclaiming "Derp!""
The Term Derp does not mean (And I can't believe I'm saying this)[Le Triggerwarning XXDDDDD] Retarded, Mentally Defunct, Or stupid. It is an exclamation of silliness, and the fact that someone can get exasperated over the fact that a Character from a cartoon for little girls has a name 'Derpy' (A name lovingly given to her by the fans of the show as a term of endearment due to her crossed eyes from an animation error). Also, crossed eyes does not equate to retardation; I'd ask you to educate yourself as to what 'Brown's Syndrome' is(Start here: [link]), but I know that you are beyond accepting this; as it challenges your anti-abliest belief system. And 4chan is not promoting your page to direct flamers at you, that is ridiculous. The internet is an open medium and people are going to find your deviant-art page; Especially when you do something stupid.
You got to exercise a little bit of cliquey power and attention whore like a lonely 16 year old, but in the end was it really worth it for anyone?
Bravo... Bravo...
And, generally, i hope you are joking
I would like to think that if I were a brony by the time "Derpygate" were in full swing, I would have reacted in a more civilized manner than others. But I realize such hopes are of folly. And so, I will simply remain fond of the show and all its fans with the decency to act out of kindness and understanding rather than cruelty and ignorance. For the latter, I will not tolerate them. Because quite frankly, if both the show and your experiences have taught me anything, it's that are times when one must face people who don't DESERVE to be tolerated.
Nobody deserves to be hated this much.
But I see what you mean about the character. And I don't get why people are this angry. Hasbro changed the name and fixed the eyes, and that's that.
Secondly, she has been removed from the show completely, and she was removed ever since in February when this went down. This was all caused by about 10 people sending letters to one of the writers of the show, saying she's an ableist (despite her having a son with disabilities). Yes, the person who wrote Derpy into the episode had a disabled son.
The hate is really somewhat understandable when you consider how many persons, disabled and not, who loved Derpy Hooves and who are now really upset that she is gone from the show forever because a small group of people thought they should dictate what others should find offensive.
Secondly, I thought they just changed her by eyes and voice actor. I haven't seen the episode after they sent letters to the writers of the show.
I can see that a lot of people loved Derpy Hooves were angry and upset, and I'm not saying they can't be mad, because they have the complete right to. But it's mean and unnecessary to be as mad as some people are about Yamino. Some people are threatening her life and telling her to "burn in hell" because she wanted Derpy changed. If you listen to "what went wrong" by YAC you'll see what I mean
I think part of the reason why people are mad at Yamino is the way she insulted all Derpy fans by saying stuff like "this is the type of fans you're pandering to" and sending Amy Keating comments from angry 4channers, basically claiming that all Derpy fans are trolls. Part could also be the way she deleted perfectly valid comments from people with disabilities who disagreed with her, while leaving very rude comments calling bronies retards (hey, I thought that was ableist) and comments like you said say "burn in hell". People see what they are told to see.
People still keep mentioning you on /co/.
