I drew the original sketch for this a very long time ago, and I dusted it off for this portfolio I'm making. These people are loosely based off the Ainu, a people native to Japan. They have darker skin than other Japanese people, and came from a different culture.

I imagine this being set far after the end of the series, when the different nations have started to crossbreed a little. I'm a sucker for heterochromatic eyes. ;D

Another piece of interesting information is the practice of mustache-tattooing amongst the women of the Ainu.
Additionally, the Ainu are descendants of Caucasians that had migrated through Asia, though more in depth information about this matter I lack.

Hell yeah ainu!! I love those d00ds. when I put a race of Yuki Onna people in my comic I put a splash of ainu in there, cuz it.. is awesome. And cuz they come from the land of the ice and snowww.

You should read The Graceling by Kristin Cashore. [link] Basically it is set in a world where if your eyes turn two different colors, you are a Graceling, and you are really good at something (it ranges from making great wine and being able to climb trees, to being able to read minds or kill people). I really enjoyed it, and since you are a fan of heterochromatic eyes you might like it even more...
