I was not able to wear purple today, so I wanted to draw something to still show my support for bullied gay teens in the wake of the recently publicized suicides. I want to add something though, something I feel the "It Gets Better" campaign has really overlooked. The problem isn't that gay teens are having trouble coping with bulling.

THE PROBLEM IS THE BULLYING. How would it be acceptable if this was a support movement for beaten housewives? Would we be content with just saying "It's going to get better?" Here's a suggestion. How about "I promise to do everything I can to put an end to homophobic bullying"? Educate yourself, educate those around you, and speak up when you hear someone say something hurtful. It's all good to wear purple and show support, but the most important thing is to speak up and make a difference. </soapbox>

Sofie (Nightingale) is making the ASL sign for "Love." (Can also mean "I Love You.") Emily was signing "Spirit," but she's been interrupted. XD

Pictured from left to right: Sister Claire, Gabrielle, Evil Cat, Snowy, Sofie (AKA Nightingale), Charlie, and Emily.

I am SO tired, this was very hard to put together- I loathe group pictures, but this was even weirder than usual due to my two completely different styles. XD;

Don't be ashamed to say if Jesus Christ is your Lord and Savior. If you are not scared to say it. Say it with me in 1...2...3...

I know what it feels like to be on the receiving end of some pretty harsh bullying. I don't wish that on anyone. It really effed my head up for a long time. Truth be told I still carry a few mental scars from it. And yes, I did contemplate suicide once or twice.

It was a bad time of my life. Those bullies essentially took what were supposed to be the best years of my life, and ruined them. So yes, I'm angry.

There are a lot of problems with how bullying is handled in schools in the US. I won't go into all that here. But the problem can't be fixed until the parents pay a little less attention to climbing the corporate ladder and a little more attention to their children.

I, personally, don't support "Spirit Day". I find the whole concept to be highly problematic.

For one, the only suicides that are being publicized are those of generally affluent white gay males. Other queer kids commit suicide, too, to say nothing of transgender individuals. It's an uphill fight just to get media outlets to use the right pronouns when a transgender person dies, much less get it as widely publicized as the suicides have been.

People are also acting like gay people killing themselves is some new phenomena, when the queer community has--and has had--a huge suicide rate.

In addition, I really hate how people have appropriated purple. October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and its ribbon is purple. Domestic violence is an issue that is very important to me--I'm a survivor of 11 years of child abuse. Not only are they appropriating the color from an already existing, important awareness campaign, they're also insuring that less attention is paid to spreading awareness on how to report domestic violence and how to get out of a violent situation.

Not to say that I have anything against those who chose to participate in "Spirit Day". I just find the whole concept to be extremely problematic.

I agree on those issues, I had a really long discussion with someone about it yesterday. I wrote up a little more about the topic on tumblr as well: [link]

It's true, is quite frustrating that it only becomes widely publicized when it's cisgendered, affluent white males. And even then, I'm afraid that in a month or two, everyone will forget about it, just like with the Iran Elections where everyone was wearing green, some of them without even really knowing what it was all about. Withing weeks it was forgotten. Same with the earthquakes in Haiti. Our society is one with a very short attention span. The fact that we are even finally starting to pay attention to gay rights on a national scale these last couple years is a big deal, between gay marriage and DADT and now this- I think the gay community (particularly the white male gay community....) has really been in the spotlight in politics and the media lately. I hope that other LGBT people start to get coverage soon, too- ignoring trans folks, lesbians, gay people of color, etc. is just another form of discrimination.

As far as using the color purple, that is pretty unfortunate that these two Awareness campaigns fell in the same month. Fortunately, I don't think that the use of the color will make that big a difference to spreading information about domestic abuse. The color itself doesn't say anything unless it is backed by a campaign, so as long as there are people bringing up the discussion and educating, the information will be out there, regardless of what color the pamphlets and ribbons are. There are a lot of issues that need to be resolved, certainly many more than we have colors for.
