I'm not sure how warranted this is, I mean we still don't really get Catherine. It's hard to feel sympathetic for her when I have no idea what she's been through.
Basically: pretty, unhappy looking naked nun.
Of course, we always draw stuff related to stories that haven't fully come out yet, but I do wonder why the angst-pic is so popular. Not that I don't do them myself, there's an almost irresistible compulsion to try and get people to understand your intent for a character with quick and dirty expression, but from a purely objective standpoint it feels odd to me. It doesn't help express the character thoroughly and it can detract from the real exposition when it hits.
Anyhow, that's enough 2am pondering from me, back in my box!
I'm surprised you think it's come out of nowhere, because I've actually been foreshadowing quite a bit regarding Catharine's reasons for being scarred (mentally and physically.) Perhaps it's time for a backread.
She's going to remain pretty mysterious for a while, but her story will slowly unfold as Claire begins to piece together her past. (The readers are learning along with Claire.)
of course, but foreshadowing is not the same as... well, knowing.
Knowing that someone has had a horrible past is not the same as knowing what specifically that past was. Perhaps a vaguely decent analogy is the difference between someone saying they had a terrible day and someone telling you they had a car accident on the way to their wedding.
we all have terrible days we don't all have accidents on the way to our wedding.
I guess I'm not really sure what your critique is, that I should show something explicit about her past? Because I can't do that, it would spoil the story.
nah, just late night ramblings. I guess I was trying to get across the idea that because you haven't *yet* shown something explicit, the effect of the piece is lessened. It's much harder to empathise with a character who has had a nebulous bad time, than one with specific scars. Drawing a piece of her in a vulnerable state doesn't connect with Cat as I know her. Sure I know she's had a bad run, but she's always been capable when free, sad but strong, perhaps even a mite haughty when not. If anything I would have expected Cat in a position of nudity to be somewhat unruffled compared to most. She seems the sort of character to turn weakness into strength, and apparent vulnerability into power, will or otherwise. Seeing her like this, while it may of course be valid given unknowns, does not mesh with the current Cat's demeanour.
Of course, these are just my gut reactions. It is, as they say, your show. I just thought you might be interested in why the piece didn't 'click' for me, as so much of your work does.
And I can wait for the grand revelations along with everyone else, never fear ^^
