Nightingale Sketch- Undercover by Yamino Nightingale Sketch- Undercover by Yamino
I drew this in Amsterdam, while researching for my upcoming comic, Nightingale! This is a sneak peak at the concept art.

Undercover.... at Gay Pride, maybe? I drew this on a moving train, which is why EVERYTHING is wrong with it. It's especially painful to look at Emily's wrist.

I started out just trying to sketch Emily's face, then I gave her a body, and then we happened to go into a gay shop where I saw some t-shirts/posters/bumper stickers that said "I'm not Gay... I just like Rainbows!" and I knew I had to draw a character wearing it sometime. Then I realized how hilarious it would be if Sofie was somehow dragged into accompanying Emily at Gay Pride for whatever reason. Sofie isn't really homophobic, and heck, she might even be interested in a girl herself someday, but she doesn't ever really think about dating because she is always SRS BUSINESS GUYS.

...She especially hates being dressed up in silly, silly clothes and being jostled around by crazy, noisy strangers. The only reason I can imagine why she'd be talked into it would be if she and Emily were going undercover as part of her superhero endeavors.

It's art and stories like this that make me want to be like you when I grow up. :)

It's just gonna take some practice!

Aww! It does take a lot of practice, but it's worth the end result. Keep it up! <3

It might not be the most refined sketch around, but I have noticed that it seems to be somewhat stylistically different from Sister Claire. I do have a question about your Nightingale comic now that I know that is what it is going to be. Will you be posting it after you are done writing Sister Claire or will be working on both concurrently more or less?

Yes, it's a completely different style of art and story. =)

I'll be working on both at the same time, but I'm not sure how/when I'll be posting final pages of Nightingale. It's still in concept, and will be for at least another year. Unlike Sister Claire, it's going to be heavily based on real locations and will required intensive research.

It sounds like it will be an interesting departure from Sister Claire. What is the genre of Nightingale by the way? Do you have a webpage about the comic that I can check out?

Oh, it's going to be COMPLETELY different from Sister Claire. xD

The web page so far is under construction, and doesn't offer much information that isn't already in the comments on the drawings here. [link]

The genre is technically "superhero", but it breaks a lot of typical superhero tropes. It's a lot more realistic (hence all the intensive research I'm putting into it, lol). As such, it'll focus less on action scenes and more on investigation/suspense. Imagine if Batman, Daredevil, and Sherlock Holmes somehow had a baby, and she was a blind little girl in Amsterdam. That's Nightingale. XD

It sounds like it will be an interesting comic. Since she seems to be the love child of Batman, Daredevil and Sherlock Holmes, one can only hope she inherited Bat's intelligence without his brooding nature. So I take it Sofie is the taller girl in the picture while Emily is the shorter?

So which one is the hero and which is the sidekick?

Actually, Sofie is the smaller, blind one. Emily is her taller, dark-haired deaf cousin, and she'd HATE to be called a sidekick. I think she'd settle for being called a "partner." XD

You can see a lot more Nightingale concept art, including pics of Sofie in her "gear" here: [link]

Ahh. Cool. So how old are the characters? So far I have heard of Charlotte, her mother, Sofie and Emily.

Sofie is 15, Emily is 16, Charlie is 18, and her mom is in her late 30's, early 40's. (She was a young mom. o-o)

Oh, I wasn't expecting Charlie to be the lesbian. But emily being bi is pretty cool (I mean, it seems... kind of rare to see bisexuals in comics/webcomics, I THINK. But I might (most likely) be mistaken)

It's not really that rare. Maybe it's different in webcomics about romance (I have to admit that I read extrely few on the subject) but more often than not, I've noticed that bisexual girls are presented as being really slutty/fickle. And usually they end up with a guy after having their fun with girls.

This comic is breaking a lot of stereotypes and comic conventions, and I hope that it'll force people to pay more attention to the characters and their personalities rather than viewing them as predictable stereotypes. =)

Yeah, that's kind of what I wanted to mean. Lot of bisexual characters are bisexual because they're démonstrated to bem or to make a statement. I kind of expect your characters to have a seuxal orientation without it being a statement (Ecept thatv treating them just like the others will be a statement, a good one, in itself

Am I even slightly clear or understandable ? XD

I think I more or less understood what you mean, lol! I'm doing my best to make characters who aren't stereotypes, but real people. <3
