Female Bodytypes in AT by Yamino Female Bodytypes in AT by Yamino
I love Susan Strong's design, although I wish she wasn't just another Aryan blonde blue eyed human. I would have liked her more as a woman of color, just for a bit of racial diversity in the show. Maybe the choice was a conscious one, to make her eventually turn out to be related to Finn, but... ehn. I was pleasantly surprised by her amazonian bulkiness. I found her to be overall a very charming character.

I read LSP's "lumpyness" as coding for being fat, which is one of the reasons I adore the character so much. She's lumpy and she considers it the hottest thing about her. She FLAUNTS DOSE LUMPS. You go, LSP.

There's been some debates on Tumblr whether Fionna is "chubby" or not, but in my headcanon, she is. I love the idea of a curvy action hero girl.

PB is a bit harder for me to categorize. When I imagine her as more realistically rendered, I don't think of her as being stick thin as she is in this heavily stylized style. I think she'd be less curvy than Fionna, and taller.

If I had included Marceline in the lineup, I think she'd be the mostly lanky and hunched over. Marceline in my mind is rather androgynously proportioned, almost gangly.

Fiona is chubby to me. If you compare Finn to Princess Bubblegum and Marceline he is bigger than them. Fiona is female Finn. Fiona compared her waist to Marcel Lee and Gumball she is chubbier than them. Compare her to Marceline and Bubblegum she is sill chubby. She has way more curves. Marceline and Bubblegum have thin legs while Fiona is design heavier.

I think the show's whiteness is probably because Ooo most likely used to be Europe.

I'm more bothered by the proportions of Susan's head to the rest of her body, personally, since she's so "lumpin'" tall!
LSP also gets so many internets for her lump flaunting.

Hmmm... love the drawings, but I've gotta say, I picture LSP as less fat, but still a tad more than simply "curvy". My opinion, though. ;)

Eh, I always assumed Ooo was set somewhere in Europe, and the majority of Europeans tend to be blonder, whiter, and have bluer eyes than most others. Of course, that's just how I thought of it.

It's a majority rules kinda thing in my head. They're most likely to be like that because there were more of them before the war, making their survival rate higher. Of course, It's still possible, but whatever. Their choice, right? That's what we have head canons for, amirite?

By the way, Susan is plain adorable. >. <
smurfintheblue Featured By Owner Nov 19, 2012
sigh why must everything be racialized? There is no racial agenda or diversity issue because you've simply missed the obvious. Susan is white and blonde because Finn is white and blonde, looking similar ya know it tends to happen in families. They are the only two characters with such similar features ;)
You didn't think Finn really came from a cabbage did you?

Oh, this is a really good human-LSP. I would have liked her smaller though. Not smaller as in skinnier, smaller as in shorter. In my mind her 3 most prominent characteristics are lumpy(fat), purple and small. Feels strange to see her taller than Fiona...

Also, on the subject of Susan being blond, that might be an effect of where they live. A lot of people seem to assume that Ooo is in the US, but there is actually quite possible that it's actually in Russia or the northern half of Europe (but not Scandinavia). I'm especially thinking about the Ice King's past. It seems to me (based on his name, the architecture of the houses where he lived, among other things) that he did not live in the US. The Ice Kingdom is most likely that same place, and Ooo and the Ice Kingdom are clearly adjacent...

I've kinda got stuck on pondering over where Ooo is supposed to be... All the little things... Like the poster of Venice in Simon's apartment...

What I'm trying to say is that there aren't that many colored people in those places, so it is not unlikely that if Susan is their descendant she would turn out to be blond. Susan still has some color to her skin even if she has lived underground... I'm much paler. And Finn is only 14 right, his hair might go brown later.

i think that never saying what susan is (a human or a fish...kinda thing) is the best trolling ever in cartoons

"Aryan blonde blue eyed human"

Seriously? Consider the reality of this show and how consistently that reality has been established from episode to episode. What does racial diversity in a show even matter when there's only a couple of human beings and everyone else is some colorful being? We've got a red hot dog princess, a green slimy princess, a pink princess made of gum, a purple princess made of gunk, a bright yellow dog, a bright blue ice king, a green vampire girl, and everything else inbetween. I don't think it's fair for you to thrust that kind of weight onto such a light-hearted show. Cartoons are never meant to babysit social attitudes, they're meant to entertain.
Hannahcookie44 Featured By Owner Jun 19, 2012  Hobbyist General Artist
Omg chill out, everyone's entitled to an opinion, and that's hers/his, so just, relax don't take things to seriously, your saying cartoons are meant to be fun and entertaining and then getting so worked up about this little opinion. Jeez.

Great picture by the way, keep up the great work!

Because Yamino kills everything by reading into too much. Sorry I managed to not only look just as deeply into this as Yamino, but that I can actually back up what I'm saying with facts.
Yamino Featured By Owner Apr 17, 2012  Professional Digital Artist
They're meant to entertain people who aren't white, too.
Peevely Featured By Owner Apr 18, 2012
And when have they not done that? I think that kind of claim is hard to back up, since there's no study I know of that states that audiences for cartoons are predominantly white. And even if that were true, it shouldn't come as a surprise since, based on the 2010 Census, the next largest demographic based on skin color in the United States is a mere thirteen percent.

With all that being said, how familiar are you with the typical legal counsel and marketing department for television animation? Believe you me, just as creativity is stifled all the way from above, the responsibilities come with it. Storyboard directors and other high up positions involved in the production process have to look at this stuff to make absolutely sure they don't step on anyone's toes. The fact that there's an entire job field for it and that animators in the business have to answer to these guys should make it clear that alienating potential audiences is not in the game plan. Now I understand that this might happen anyway, since you can guarantee an audience to keep coming back if you pander to them, but I highly doubt race trickles into that process. For toys like Barbie dolls? Absolutely. But television animation? And something like Adventure Time? We have to look at this on a case-by-case basis.

According to Natasha Allegri, You're right about Fionna, "Fionna is heavier set than Finn (which Natasha referred to as "chubby cute")"
Final-Avalanche Featured By Owner Jan 29, 2012
I think you pretty much nailed the characters body types. Fionna has been confirmed as "chubby cute" by her creator. And one of the Adventure Time staff confirmed that Finn is chubby as well on their formspring (which I would not have guessed without having been told). And PB has been stated to be skinny but has a big butt (revealed on natazilla's formspring).
xXDeadlyNightshadeXx Featured By Owner Jan 22, 2012  Hobbyist General Artist
I love the diversity that you've portrayed in these characters. And yes, Fionna is chubby but god dangit is she an awesome character!

LSP. Oh. My. Glob. I freaking love her the way that you drew her in your style! I always imagined her being a bit bigger like this, and her diva attitude just makes her easily one of my top three favourite AT characters.

Susan is amazing too. She's just so adorable and they need to make more episodes with her.

For PB, I always thought that she was intended to be more of an hourglass shape, but that could always be just me.
Yamino Featured By Owner Jan 23, 2012  Professional Digital Artist
I kept her the same as she looks in the show, or at least in the official art. It's true that from episode to episode (depending who is drawing her) she can be curvier or not. I like to think that since she's made of gum, she can change her shape to her liking on a day to day basis. xD
WaterdragonTonx94 Featured By Owner Jan 12, 2012  Hobbyist General Artist
I agree with your perspective(ok i think most people here said that Susan has green eyes and i think that is even on wiki but never mind)

I think that Princess BubellGum has a normal figruine so not cruvy but not realy skiny, somethin in between and she is tall so she wuld look even skinier

but love this one completly

Natasha said when she designed fiona she just wanted to draw a chubby girl with bunny ears when she designed fiona. And she said said bubblegum is skinny, but not as much as marceline.
Tanderule Featured By Owner Dec 20, 2011  Hobbyist General Artist
Yeah, I noticed in the episode that Fionna was a little chubbier than Finn. But, that's epicly adorable. I guess that since Finn wasn't known for being too adorable, they wanted to make Fionna have that type of aspect.

I definately think that Fionna's chubby, and it's pointless to argue over a cartoon character's body shape. Seriously, why do people think it's so bad being chubby?
Also- you drew Susan so freaking cute :)
