Apparently, yesterday Ace Attorney fandom was celebrating “Diego Day” aka “Punch Dahlia In the Face Day” (their words, not mine) because she canonically poisoned him on August 27th. Shows how little I care about Diego, I hadn’t remembered that date at all. XD
I can’t help but feel more sympathetic for Dahlia. Diego is always glamorized as a gentleman despite being insufferably condescending to women. But Dahlia is really harshly judged by most AA fans, because she was the enemy of their favorite characters. People commonly overlook the childhood abuse she suffered which shaped her into who she became. Her history was a complex and tragic.
This is for Dahlia, who is so often mischaracterized as a shallow, maniacal murder. For Dahlia, who was unabashedly cruel to a world that treated her cruelly.
As the one before me stated, I love how you looked into her past, present and future for this picture. At the point in the game where who channeled her spirit was revealed, I cheered silently, but it must have killed her. I also like how ghost Dahlia's hair is blood, which flies back (as if in a headwind) to make your signature. The 2-d picture of Dahlia in Maya's body makes the most impact, like the one before me said, she's tearing off the magatama necklace and discarding any connection to the Fey families, who just ignored her only because she couldn't be a true Fey spirit medium. 5/5 on everything, because it is just a beautiful picture...
I'll start with the drawing itself: The colors you used were really relaxing, and with the background really pops her character more. She is drawn very simple but the small things - details on the dress, shading on her body, and the way the hair is at the ends is a really nice touch. The Dahlia in the back is even more stunning. It's a two-dimensional, clean, and fine drawing.
I'm really attracted to her eyes and expression. The simple blush you added to her cheeks and shining tears makes it even stronger. In the back one, she is wearing her Kurain outfit, and you see her ripping off her Magatama, as she wants to separate herself from all of it; the main family, the village, the fact her mother didn't value them without the powers. And then with the upfront one, you see her how she is now. The dress, her own person, and that look of maybe suffering, tribulation, and acceptance.
As for the concept itself, I generally like when Dahlia is represented this way, especially in art. However, I do feel that she is not redeemable, as in the end, there are no regrets. The only regrets she has is how she carried out her plans. When she had mentioned that she had merely found Iris annoying and persuaded their father to drop her off at Kurain, was that point I realized that that's how much she was distant from people, that she lacked that thing of 'love'.
Her selfishness in wanting the jewel herself, all of the lives she affected... it was such a domino effect (I do admire the creators for that in the game, but anyway) - Dahlia is a complex character. She is heavily disliked for obvious reasons. I dislike her personality, of course; and all that she did to Mia, Godot, Phoenix, etc. But I feel that people don't look farther than that like you had.
It's a really great art piece, and you did a really great job with it in all areas.
Dahlia is one of my favorite characters in the whole game series, I think her story is truly tragic. And I love the cold stare and the bloody looking hair she has in this picture. <3
I noticed from the comments that the transparent person in the backround is also Dahlia, only when she was younger? I actually first thought she was Iris since I couldn't really see the haircolor and maybe the age difference isn't showing so well. I think the confusion could have been avoided if you had drawn her being clearly younger and maybe have a slightly different hairstyle.
I agree with you 100% on Dahlia. I actually love her.
She is indeed, a monster (come on, she's a killer that hid behind a facade and now is a pissed-off ghost), but one issue I have with AA attorney fans is the "romanticization/villainification" factor they had. She was an enemy to most of the AA protagonists, but people like to forget that Dahlia was the victim of child abuse and horrific parenting, and as such, her mind developed the idea that man was meant to be manipulated and not to be loved.
This is a rather harsh statement I had made, but in a Dahlia piece I have on my account, I actually said that to them, Dahlia might as well have been Damien.
Evil isn't always born, but made.
Thanks for making this and sharing similar statements.
I actually both hate and love Dahlia. I totally sympathize with her (given what I experienced in my life) and totally love her as a bad girl. But at the same time, I dislike the way she's become, I mean, for what I've lived through, I could have become like her but I didn't and she had to be judged for what she'd done.
Great and complex character, arousing hatred and admiration and sympathy in me at the same time is quite unusual, and I love those mixed feelings.
Of course, the red of Dahlia's hair is what hits you first, but after that I really can't get over the way you've drawn her expression on the possessing version next to her. So much awesome.
And I guiltily admit that Dahlia and Iris are two of the very few characters from the original trilogy that I care about, so it is nice to see Dahlia getting some love.
Thanks! The Dahlia on the left is actually her as a child. I know it can be confusing because she's faded, it's meant to be a memory rather than a ghost.
